Not Seeing the Dying Forest for the Trees?

The Pando aspen clone or 'trembling giant', the world's largest organism, is collapsing
I read the above news story at the ABC news site the other day and thought what a great metaphor that is for the way we humans look after our environment as we stand by and watch it slowly die.
When I saw the name "Pando" I couldn't help thinking of the main villain in the movie 'Two Hands' who was named Pando.

Japanese nature therapy: A beginner's guide to forest bathing
"When Kate Bendal told her bushwalking husband that she was going to try forest bathing, he wondered if it involved swimming or nudity.
Instead, it's more likely to include
moving at a snail's pace and listening to the trees.
"It sounds airy-fairy, but when you're in
the forest it all makes sense," says Kate, a Southern Highlands businesswoman who recently joined a guided forest bathing walk."

I think that news story got it wrong by saying that the Pando aspen clone is the world's largest organism, because I think it would actually be the Earth itself somehow.
But I guess a lot of people just don't see it that way;-)
