Peter Carey: The Best and Worst of Times ... and Books?

I’m halfway through Peter Carey’s novel ‘The Chemistry of Tears’ and was wondering what other readers thought of the book after reading it.
Apparently it has one of the lowest ratings at the GoodReads website and made it onto the list of 50 worst books rated at that site, with one guy even making a podcast called ‘Cracked Spines’ about reading the books on that list and featuring an episode devoted to Peter’s novel.
I also found a You Tube where his book about the Kelly Gang made it onto The Guardian newspaper’s Top 100 books written in English of all time.
I must admit that ‘The Chemistry of Tears’ is no page turner, but it hardly deserves to be on that Goodreads list IMO.
And unlike other reviewers at the Goodreads site, I’m determined to read the book right through to the end and then choose to read either Mary Shelley’s Frankensteinor Herman’s ‘Moby Dick’:-)
Seeing Monsters in Real Life?
I have not read Peter’s book on the Kelly Gang, but I have seen the movie that was recently made from it, and to be honest I’m just not a fan of Ned Kelly -
