The Opportunity of Unknown Things?

The Boston Red Sox?
Psycho?
I wrote a post the other day called Unknown Things, which was about life's seemingly random acts that can change or terminate a life.
Today I see this senseless killing of a young Aussie baseball-er randomly targeted by youths on an apparent killing spree, that thankfully didn't claim anymore lives.
Chris Lane
"A MELBOURNE baseball star was hunted down and killed by three teenagers in a drive-by shooting in Oklahoma, local police believe.
Chris Lane, 22, who was in the US on a sports scholarship, was going out for a regular run when he was followed, shot and left to die on a quiet road, police said.
The accused, males aged 15, 16, and 17, were in custody in Stephens County Jail this morning, awaiting formal murder charges expected Monday local time.
Duncan Police chief Danny Ford told the Herald Sun that Mr Lane had run past a house where the teenagers were gathered.
"They followed him, I can’t reason in my mind what their thought process was," he said."
'I love you so much': Girlfriend Sarah Harper's tribute to slain Melbourne baseballer Christopher Lane
" "He went by and they saw him, and one or all three of them agreed that he was their target."
"They wanted to be Billy Bob Badasses. I think they were on a killing spree.
"We would have had more bodies that night if we didn't get them."
Police were waiting for a warrant to recover the weapon, believed to be a small calibre revolver. They did not release the number of shots fired.
Mr Lane, who grew up in Oak Park in Melbourne's north, was studying in the US on a scholarship at East Central University and was visiting his girlfriend of four-an- a-half years Sarah Harper.Ms Harper, a talented sportswoman, declined an interview request from the Duncan Banner newspaper.Mr Lane’s father, Peter, said the family was devastated by the loss of a "sensational kid" just two weeks before his 23rd birthday." "He was just an athlete going out for a run," Mr Lane said.
"According to police, it was just a completely random drive-by shooting."
Lane, the youngest of four children, had played for Essendon and Watsonia baseball clubs.
The Essendon Bombers?
Duncan is a town of 24,000 people, home to a major Halliburton oil plant, 131km south of Oklahoma City in America’s Midwest.
Mr Lane was running through an area of "high dollar homes" when he was shot at the intersection of Country Club Road and Twilight Beach Road. A memorial of flowers has already been put up.
He had been running for about five minutes along Country Club Road before he was killed, and it was understood that was his regular route, which went alongside a country club on one side and paddocks for horses on the other.
Chief Ford said there was no suggestion that Mr Lane had spoken with the teenagers before he was killed, or that he knew them.
"I can assure you, he had no idea who these boys were," he said.
"He’s a victim of opportunity, I’m sorry to say that. Somebody would have died that day, somebody mowing their yard, these boys had made up their mind."
I had just written a post the other day about crossroads and these sort of life crossroads -
Unknown Things?
and Chris was killed at a crossroad eerily enough.
His Essendon club was also creating new uniforms with Lane's initials and his number, 40, on a logo.
Which is eerily reminiscent of the number 42 worn by all baseball players on April 15th for recognition of the great Jackie Robinson and his lifetime achievements.
April 15th. Same day as the senseless

Life can be full of seemingly random tragic events ... or so it seems to us from where we view these events.
Nothing though makes the pain any easier to bare.
