National Cheddar Day

Another irony is that 'Cheddar Cheese Day' falls on a Friday this year, too.

As Australia's biggest selling Cheddar Cheese brand 'Coon' was renamed 'Cheer' to avoid the controversy around the brand name.

"On 13 January 2021, Lino A. Saputo, the chair and CEO of Saputo Inc., announced the new name as "Cheer" cheese. He said, "Treating people with respect and without discrimination is one of our basic principles". A number of other Australian companies also rebranded some of their products which have names with racist connotations in 2020, and others face pressure to do so."

UPDATE: February 14th, 2026

I bought some Cheer sliced cheese at the supermarket yesterday when I ducked in to get some groceries.

And some cheddar flavoured 'Grain Waves'.

Can't say that I would buy Cheer again over the other cheeses to choose from, as it's pretty ordinary and a bit pricey, I think.

And I'm glad to report that nothing bad happened in my personal sphere yesterday.
