World Curlew Day? 🌍πŸͺΊπŸŒŽπŸͺΉπŸŒ

April 21st
"The first World Curlew Day was the brain-child of Mary Colwell in 2017, with the purpose of shining a light on the plight that this rare and unique bird faces. Mary Colwell was so disturbed by the disappearing Eurasian curlew that, starting on April 21, 2016, she walked 500 miles to find out why!"
A curlew at my neighbour's front door:-)
I've written about
curlews before on this blog -
I got home from work a week or two ago and was putting my car into the garage, when I noticed what I thought was a new statue in my neighbour's garden.
But I soon saw that it was a live curlew staring at something that had caught its eye, so I snapped a few pictures of it on my phone.
That's about as close as I have seen a curlew that close to my unit.
So, seeing that today was World Curlew Day, I thought I would share my photos in this post.
I've got a feeling that the ones around my place are stone curlews though.
I even decided to buy a copy of 'Curlews on Vulture Street: Cities, Birds, People and Me' by Darryl Jones today, as I've been meaning to get a copy for years and today is as good excuse as any.
'Curlews on Vulture Street: Cities, Birds, People and Me'
"The curlews are a group of nine species of birds in the genus Numenius, characterised by their long, slender, downcurved bills and mottled brown plumage. The English name is imitative of the Eurasian curlew's call, but may have been influenced by the Old French corliu, "messenger", from courir, "to run"."
