I did a search for "Hong Kong Day" in Wikipedia and got the old day, which ironically was held on January 26th, the same date as the now controversial 'Australia Day' holiday.
The Hong Kong handover ceremony officially marked the transfer of sovereignty from the United Kingdom. It was an internationally televised event with the ceremony commencing on the night of 30 June 1997 and finishing on 1 July 1997 at the new wing of the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC) in Wan Chai.
I find it ironic that American Independence Day falls in the same week as Establishment Day in Hong Kong, where Hong Kongers still seem to be fighting for their independence from the CCP.
