Typhoon Soulik before it made landfall on Taiwan on July 12, 2013 |
"China has evacuated more than 300,000 people as the
typhoon which brought torrential rain and powerful winds to Taiwan
begins to effect the mainland.
China's National Meteorological
Centre says Typhoon Soulik hit the south-eastern Fujian province at
about 4.00pm local time with wind speeds of up to 118 kilometres an
hour.Soulik has slowed since ripping through Taiwan, uprooting trees, taking roofs from houses and flooding streets.
One man died in the country when he was hit in the head by a brick that came loose during the typhoon, with at least 30 others injured.
Xinhua news agency reported that Soulik continues to head inland into China.
"(It) is currently moving northwest at 20 to 25 kilometres per hour and is expected to enter neighbouring Jiangxi Province after midnight," the agency said citing a local weather station.
Chinese authorities say they have dispatched close to 5,500 soldiers across the southeast coast to help with rescue efforts."
