Internet Blackout Day in Malaysia?💻🔌

Every August 14th
I had not heard of 'Internet Blackout Day in Malaysia' until this week, but apparently it has been going since 2012.
Originally my son and I planned on traveling to Malaysia on a day trip from Singapore, not knowing then how far from the border Kuala Lumpur was.
Apparently it's like driving from Brisbane to Coffs Harbour, and having done that trip many times in my car there was no way I was going to do that trip on a bus day trip.
Kuala Lumpur is still on my bucket list though, as I want to visit the Petronas Towers and the Merdeka 118 (which isn't open yet anyway).
Every August 14th
"Internet Blackout Day in Malaysia was a day of protest against a law that many saw as a threat to online freedom. Websites across the country went dark, displaying messages that highlighted the risks posed by the new amendment to the Evidence Act.
This law made anyone associated with a website or blog responsible for its content, even if they didn’t post it themselves.
The protest gained significant traction, with support from prominent political leaders and activists. This momentum pushed the government to reconsider the controversial amendment.
The unity displayed during this event demonstrated the potential impact of collective action in the digital age.
It also highlighted the complex relationship between online activism and political influence. It shows that the internet can be a formidable tool for holding power accountable, but only when backed by widespread public support and awareness."
Whilst we never got to step into
Malaysia, we were able to see it from Singapore when we caught the MRT out to the lighthouse near the bridge that takes you between Malaysia and Singapore.
Forest City in Malaysia is one place I'll have to check out next time I'm over that way.
Especially if they ever finish building it.
And I wouldn't mind having a ride on the
Fu Ning either.
Another thing for the bucket list I guess?-)
