Soy Sauce Fish Containers Banned from September in South Australia? 🍣🐟

When I saw the news about South Australia banning soy sauce fish containers from the 1st of September 2025, I went out and bought some sushi to keep a piece of memorabilia, before my state of Queensland a some point might follow South Australia in banning them.

Vernon God Little (2003)
That story also remined me of the South Australian born 2003 Booker Prise winning author DBC Pierre, whose book 'Lights Out in Wonderland' (with the soy sauce fish container on the front cover) I had read years ago -
A Wonderland of Coincidence in the Book Cellar
I had not read 'Vernon God Little' before but remembered that I had purchased a secondhand copy of the book a month or two ago, as it was one of the '1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die' I was told.
Plus, September was also 'National Americana Month', so I thought how many more signs do I need to read the Booker Prize winning book?
Every September
'1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die'
So, I thought, now is as good a time as any and picked the book out of my pile of "to read" books and started reading it, while listening to podcast episodes featuring DBC Pierre.
DBC Pierre - Vernon God Little
When I listened to the 'World Book Club' podcast I thought I was in for a good read, listening to all the feedback DBC was getting from people who had read the book.
The Strange Case of Vernon God Little
But as much as I wanted to like the book, I didn't.
Vernon God Little (2003)
Malarkey might be a nice summary of the book if I had to write a one-word review;-)
Malarkey meaning:
insincere or foolish talk :
bunkum
The idea in the plot of the book is a good one I thought, but the book bored me to death, and I was glad when I reached the end of the book, a bit like a marathon runner wanting to stop but just has to run the race out.
I thought 'Lights Out in Wonderland' was a much better book, but I wouldn't say that it was one of '1001 Books You Must Read Before You Dieeither.
To be fair 'Vernon God Little' was DBC's first novel, and ironically, I put his book aside to read Trent Dalton's new book, which also involved a study of "gutter journalism" in the storyline.
Now that I have finished reading both books, I'm reading another book another book I bought secondhand that I came across in the op shop, which is another blast from the past.
I wonder if Mal enjoyed this book as much as Vic seems to have?-)

I have since donated 'Vernon God Littleto a street library for somebody else to read, and while I wasn't a fan of this book, I did enjoy listening to all the podcast episodes I found DBC Pierre on talking about the book and other ones he has written since that first book of his won the Booker Prize back in 2003.
Especially listening to all those podcast episodes in 2025, the Year of the Snake:-)
