Video of the incident at Madison Middle School in South Dakota shows the light fixture fall 9m from the rafters and smash down onto teen Michael McComish.
It landed on his back as he was crouching on the floor, lining up in a referee's position after he and his opponent were declared out of bounds, The Madison Daily Leader reported.
Onlookers rushed to lift it off him but the senior wrestler stood up and walked to the sidelines, clutching his head.
He later tweeted a photo of a cut on his head, which had been stitched up.
"Just letting everyone know I'm fine!" he wrote on January 18.
"Stitches in my head. Gash on my forehead and back of me head and little cuts from the glass nothing serious."
The young wrestler told The Madison Daily Leader he had up to 15 to 20 stitches in his forehead.
He said he heard the chains on the light fixture rattling shortly before the light fell."
