Funny you should mention that Jack as it will be Augustus Owsley Stanley's birthday tomorrow (January 19, 1935 – March 12, 2011). Augustus Owsley Stanley was a key figure in the San Francisco Bay Area hippie movement during the 1960s and played a pivotal role in the decade's counterculture. Stanley frequently recorded live tapes behind his mixing board and developed their Wall of Sound sound system, one of the largest mobile public address systems ever constructed. Stanley also helped design the band's trademark skull logo, along with Robert Thomas. If you are marveling at my impressive encyclopedic knowledge of the Dead Jack, it's more like Wikipedic knowledge that I just read of the Dead :-)
I never realized Stanley died in a car accident in the Australian state of Queensland, which I've lived in for most of my life. But he died in the top part of the state, which I have never visited, in this lifetime yet, anyway.
"Stanley died after a car accident in Australia on Saturday, March 12, 2011,not Sunday, March 13, as reported in most publications (a widely propagated error stemming from the Monday release to the press of the initial family statement, which was written on Sunday, stating he "died yesterday"). [We are a day ahead of the USA over here in Australia] The statement released on behalf of Stanley's family said the car crash occurred near his home, on a rural stretch of highway near Mareeba, Queensland."
