You Can't Win/Smiler/Joker/Batman?

A drama set in the 1800/1900s hobo underworld
You Can't Win/Joker/Smiler?
As I read through the "autobiographical" story 'You Can't Win' by Jack Black ... SPOILER ALERT ... the character Smiler who gets shot in the neck and dies in a failed burglary after following home a man and wife from the theatre because of the jewelry and other signs of wealth they were showing off, reminds me a lot of the Joker villain from Batman, and I wonder just how much influence this 1926 cult classic had on the future writers of the Batman story through the years, if any?
Anyone for Black-Jack?-)
