Lionel Shriver: Identity Politics, Political Correctness and #MeToo?

Lionel Shriver?-)
Author Lionel Shriver attracted a storm of protest when she criticized identity politics and the pressure on writers to promote progressive social and political attitudes.
She argues that the freedom to create characters who are not like you is at the heart of fiction writing."
"As the 2016 keynote speaker at the Brisbane [my hometown] Writers' Festival, Shriver gave a controversial speech about cultural appropriation.
Shriver had previously been criticized for her depiction of Latino and African-American characters in her book The Mandibles, which was described by one critic as racist and by another as politically misguided.
In her Brisbane speech, Shriver contested these criticisms, arguing that accusations of racism and cultural appropriation were tantamount to censorship and that all writers ought to be entitled to write from any perspective, race, gender or background that they choose.
The full text of her speech was published in the British newspaper The Guardian."
Uploaded onto You Tube on my birthday (Sept 23rd)?!
I'm not a racist ... BUT ... if it makes you feel better to call me one because I agree pretty much with what Lionel Shiver says in the You Tube and Big Ideas podcast, then go right ahead.
Sticks and stones and all that.
I'm certainly no fan of Trump and his supporters, but then again, I'm no fan of a PC Left gone mad, either.
I like to think of myself as slightly left of center in the political spectrum.

I've only read 'We Need to Talk About Kevin' and 'Big Brother' but I will make an effort to buy a copy of 'The Motion of the Body Through Space' (2020) and 'The Mandibles' and judge them for myself.

Happy Place Podcast: Ricky Gervais
"Fearne Cotton dials in to discover Ricky Gervais is living the dream: one that involves pasta, red wine and talking about the new series of After Life on Netflix.
Also on the agenda are
Ricky's thoughts about criticism, controversy and Fearne's duvet studio."
Some people need to lighten up and get a life, don't you think?
#MeToo?-)
