The first coincidence I found amusing was that 'The X-Files' creator Chris Carter who named his production company
Sandra Kerr from 'Bagpuss' was born on February 14th
Ten Thirteen Productions after his birth-date of 10/13, also shares his birthday of 10/13 with Margaret Thatcher.

As I was watching episode 4 of season 4 of 'The Crown' I couldn't help thinking of a few Secret Sun posts of Chris Knowles, particularly this one -

I also have recently watched the X-Files episode 'En Ami' where Chris Knowles refers to the character Marjorie Butters played by actress Louise Latham in his Secret Sun post.

I hadn't heard of 'Bagpuss' until I watched season 4 of 'The Crown' last week Wuga.
ReplyDeleteEven though I grew up with BBC shows like 'The Magic Roundabout','Bill & Ben the Flowerpot Men' and 'Dr. Who', I don't remember ever seeing 'Bagpuss' being available over here in Oz.
Diana was only three years older than me, so we would have grown up with similar English children's TV shows, but I don't remember 'Bagpuss' on the TV screens of Australia.
I doubt if Diana even watched that show in real life.
It was probably artist licence from the makers of 'The Crown' so they could put a children's princess fairy-tale in as a metaphor, as well as a bit of British nostalgia.
I haven't heard of 'Ghosts of Motley Hall' either, sorry.
The musical links were to Peter Gabriel..it was interesting I read your post as I sat in the backyard, keeping an eye on the chooks listening to Gabriel vintage Genesis..then seeing your post..something clicked in.
ReplyDeleteOliver Postgate was involved with several different children’s shows in the 70’s and most were really great.
My favourite was Noggin the Nog, but The Clangers, Pogles Wood and Ivor the Engine are all worth watching if you have an inclination.
They all have a slightly “alternative” feel to them that makes them still very watchable today.
I put Pete's songs in the post because my old mate Chris Knowles, who co-wrote 'The Complete X-Files' book released in 2008 thinks that Peter Gabriel is some kind of Bond villain, but I don't.
ReplyDeleteWhen I saw the Gabriel/Bagpuss reference in 'The Crown' I threw in Pete's 'Steam' song in reference to Gillian Anderson playing 'The Iron[ing?-]Lady' Maggie Thatcher in 'The Crown' and Pete's 'Big Time' for the young pregnant Dianna about to hit the big-time as a Princess.
Obviously the Gabriel in the Bagpuss reference in 'The Crown' wasn't referring to Peter Gabriel, but Chris will get the line about Gabriel/water princess as the Starbuck's siren, considering Gillian Anderson played Dana Scully in 'The X-Files' and her father Captain Scully called her Starbuck.
But then again, maybe he won't.
