Is The Chemistry of Tears 😭 an Ugly Duckling or a Beautiful Swan?

Having finished reading Peter Carey’s novel ‘The Chemistry of Tears’ I have to say it is a swan and not the lame ugly duck the bad reviews at the Goodreads site would have you believe, I believe.
If you are just looking for a romantic tearjerker with loveable characters to read, then forget this book, as it ain’t for you, but if you like a puzzle to ponder over then maybe this book is for you.
The words/phrase Mysterium Tremendum are written in this novel quite a lot and I was also surprised when I read that an album by the same name from the former drummer of the Grateful Dead’ came out the same year (2012) that Peter Carey’s book was released.
Also having just watched the sometimes cringe worthy movie ‘What the Bleep Do We Know?!’ filled with just as many con artists as deep thinkers and starring Marlee Matlin as Amanda, I couldn’t help thinking that the hearing-impaired Amanda in Carey’s book may have been inspired by Matlin’s Bleeping character?-)
