I like this passage/quote from the novel ‘Fear of Flying’ where Erica Jong writes on page 205, “There is nothing fiercer than a failed artist. The energy remains, but, having no outlet, it implodes in a great black fart of rage which smokes up all the inner windows of the soul. Horrible as successful artists often are, there is nothing crueler or more vain than a failed artist.”
Erica then goes on to write how her grandfather would often paint over her mother’s paintings, rather than go out and get a new canvas to paint on, which reminded me of this recent post of mine -
“Vincent Van Gogh self-portrait hidden for more than 100 years discovered hidden behind Head of a Peasant Woman painting”?
