I recently watched the Shirley Temple TV show version of 'The House of the Seven Gables', which is based on a book originally written by Nathaniel Hawthorne and published in 1851.
I had never heard of this book before, until I saw it in '1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die', right after the entry on 'Moby Dick' and before the entry of 'Uncle Tom's Cabin'.
"In the book, Hawthorne explores themes of guilt, retribution, and atonement, and colors the tale with suggestions of the supernatural and witchcraft. The setting for the book was inspired by the Turner-Ingersoll Mansion, a gabled house in Salem, Massachusetts, belonging to Hawthorne's cousin Susanna Ingersoll, as well as ancestors of Hawthorne who had played a part in the Salem Witch Trials of 1692."The House of the Seven Gables (1940) |
I listened to the 'The House of the Seven Gables' Loyal Books Apple Podcasts after watching the Shirley Temple TV show version to hear what the differences in the TV show and book versions were, which were quite a bit it seems to me.
Then I listened to a few podcasts about the "real life" House of the Seven Gables located in Salem, which seems to be inspired and built to comply with the house in the book of Hawthorne's from what I can gather, because in Hawthorne's time, the house had only three gables after a renovation to match more current architectural trends.
So, the original house inspired Hawthorne to write a semi-fictional book about a seven gabled house and then this house was modified to include seven gables to match the semi-fictional house of Hawthorne's?
"Generally recognized as the first best-selling novel, Uncle Tom's Cabin greatly influenced development of not only American literature but also protest literature in general. Later books that owe a large debt to Uncle Tom's Cabin include The Jungle by Upton Sinclair and Silent Spring by Rachel Carson."
