The Wisdom of Oz ... and Aphorisms?

I went to a book-talk at 'The Avid Reader' bookstore on November 30th, 2018, and as I'm browsing the bookshelves I see a book called 'The Wisdom of Oz' .
I pulled it from the shelf and opened it to the two pages pictured below featuring quotes from Germaine Greer.
I thought it was odd that I happened to open the book to these two pages, as Germaine Greer's talk was the last book-talk I had been to when I drove down to Byron Bay -
Signs That I Should See 'The Girl in the Spider's Web'?
"I think testosterone is a rare poison"

I hadn't heard that testosterone quote before and I wondered where these cult of personality quotes come from.
But they weren't meant to be just quotes, but also aphorisms.
I had to look up what that meant, because I'm a high school drop-out, and then while watching season 2 of 'Game of Thrones' I wondered if this screenshot from the show could be considered an aphorism?-)
The book ended with Malcolm Fraser's famous quote above (well, famous in Australia that is) which made me remember Malcolm's book-talk I saw down in Byron Bay -
Dangerous AlLIES?
I thought maybe placing Ned's quote after Malcolm's as the second last quote in the book and then Kerry Packer's quote, "I've been to the other side and let me tell you, son, there's f#ckin' nothing there", would have ended the book on an ironic aphorism as you turned to the two black pages in the back.
Not that I believe Kerry's first observation of the "afterlife", to be honest.
He's probably had a better look around once he really died, I think.
Ironically Kerry Packer died (the second and final time;-) on the first anniversary of the Boxing Day Tsunami on December 26th, 2005.
And the book-talk I was at the bookshop attending was about the Boxing Day Tsunami of 2004 -
Ripples from the Wave?
I didn't know what to make of one of Ned's other quotes in the book where he is said to have said, "It is not that I fear death. I fear it as little as to drink a cup of tea", because if you look at the mask he used to wear could you imagine trying to drink a hot cup of tea with that on?
Maybe he was saying he feared death quite a bit:-)
Elle Macpherson
I read Elle's underwear quote and didn't really get it, but then
I saw this story today and thought maybe that's what she meant?
I also saw this news story below about Bob Hawke and remembered his quote, "The world will not wait for us", and I thought no, but death will.
And on the subject of politics I saw the movie 'Vice' last night.
And while I hadn't heard the above Bush saying, Cheney did shoot a guy "accidentally" who he didn't like, while on a hunting trip in that movie.
Of course, the Bush in that quote ain't the W kind when it comes to Oz, but I like to pretend it is:-)
I didn't know whether to buy this book or not on the night, but then I saw Barry Jones' quote above and took his advice.
The Last Book I Read Changed My Life and So Has Every Other Book I Have Read
Just sayin':-)

  1. Merry Chrimbo Daz! Would you recommend Vice? I recommend Pine Gap on Netflix

  2. Thanks Explorer and I'm now counting down the hours in this last day of 2018 wondering if I should see 'Aquaman' this year or next.
And yes I would recommend seeing 'Vice', as you don't get too many tongue-in-cheek biographical comedies these days.
And there is even a two second appearance (a still) of Alex Jones in the film.
I'll probably see it again soon.
Oddly enough, I tried to find 'Pine Gap' on my Aussie Nexflix package yesterday and it isn't available.
I had noticed it was available on Netflix in Spain, but not in Australia, yet anyway.
I've got too much to watch right now anyway and I want to get up to season 7 of 'Game of Thrones' (I'm just over halfway in season 2) to see my fellow Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks supporter, Brendan Cowell's performance as Harrag, so then I can cancel my FoxtelNow subscription for a while at least until there is something interesting to watch.
    Happy New Year Ex.
