The Shamanic Artists of Byron Bay: The Medicine of Karuah and Sean O'Shea

Two shamanic works of art that I picked up on my visit last weekend to Byron Bay and find very healing were Karuah's CD 'Wild Plum', which I bought from him after a wonderful afternoon listening to him sing his ‘ethereal folk’ songs to an appreciative crowd on a Byron Bay beach front.

I still feel the magic of sitting at Byron Bay last Thursday while the waves washed in from the ocean accompanying Karuah as he sung.

And Sean O'Shea's wonderful book 'Sean O'Shea's Byron Bay' is a treat for the eyes and soul.
Once you have looked and read through the pages of Sean's book I doubt if you could find a better form of shamanic magic to sooth you.

The stories of how Sean came to take the photos of pure synchronistic moments in his life encounters are pure shamanism in motion.
Which proves that you don't necessarily have to be hit by lightning to have a shamanic moment, you just have to be lucky enough to be paying attention to what's going on around you on many levels.

And Karuah shows how sound and words can ignite the embers of emotion and touch the heart, as well ... to bring a sense of healing and well-being to the soul, if only for just a few minutes.

I realized when I bought Sean's book that he was the photographer who caught the picture of the famous Australian white whale a week before my visit to Byron Bay, which I wrote about in this recent post -

How more in tune with nature can you get than that?
And I notice that Sean is a bit of a poet along the lines of Joyce Kilmer when I spotted a few lines he wrote in the section of his book about koalas -

"Just as everyone loves a dolphin in the sea,
so everyone loves a koala in a tree."

If you go to Byron Bay remember to bring some shamanic medicine home with you.
You'll thank these medicine artists for it in time.
Or so my own spirit animal seemed to be telling me as I withdrew more cash from an ATM in the streets of Byron Bay on Thursday as the sun set in the west.
